(#7) Unit II Final

Everyone has certain issues; however, some have issues that affect their physical or mental health. Down syndrome happens to be one mental illness which can lead to physical impairments. I read an article that those with Down syndrome have multiple stages, therefore there is not one defined type of Down syndrome. One actor named Peter, has Down syndrome but his goal is to show others with Down syndrome that being independent is possible.

Peter being embraced by a substitute teacher who
defended him when someone was picking on him

Another source had over 90,000 people with Down syndrome take survey which they found great information. A common thought worldwide is that men with Down syndrome have it worse than women with Down syndrome, but this is found wrong. Gender has no effect on the mental prospect of Down syndrome. However, women have better speech patterns, and cognitive abilities.

Since Down syndrome is a mental illness there are cases in which other issues may branch off from them. Some include “attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)”, “depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, self-injurious behavior”, “psychosis”, “self-injurious behavior”, and “depression, Alzheimer's disease.”

A student with Down syndrome receiving 1 on 1 lessons.

These however can be fixed even though one with Down syndrome is challenged it does not mean that they cannot learn. So “management of behavioral and of mental health problems should have priority in the available services they will be beneficial not only to the individual served, but also to the family’s well-being.”

As Peter has been trying to tell the world it is possible for those who have Down syndrome to “live on their own, they could learn about math, [and] reading.” This idea is factual, and it has been done, just look at Peter. He considers himself a role model and he is a good one at that.

These ideas are not trying to make light of Down syndrome. Because, just like every other thing there are many cases which the results may not be proven constant. As stated women are better at formulating sentences, those who are younger tend to have more hyper and tended to have severe behavioral issues. But those who are elderly with Down syndrome are more functional and physically stable compared to other mental disorders.

So how does one progress from having Down syndrome? Well in grade school, it is common to have tutors, and even special classes. For example, when I was younger I went to speech every other day for a hour. Even though I had dyslexia and not Down syndrome the classes are the same. It is one on one teaching which benefits the children tenfold. Other services include, inclusion classes, resource rooms, self-contained classes, out-of-district placement.

(#6) Secondary Source

Mental Health Behaviour and Intellectual Abilities of People with Down Syndrome: Tuomo Määttä, Tuula Tervo-Määttä, Anja Taanila, Markus Kaski, and Matti Iivanainen

https://www.down-syndrome.org/reports/313/

This article is very informative, not only does it show many graphs of there data, they also give an introduction and a summary to their surveys. They state how many taken the survey, then broken it into gender as well. As a primary source it was very helpful for my paper and I thank google none the less.

If you are trying to find a primary source the first thing I would say is to ask a librarian, and 9/10 the librarian will be glad to help you. But, before you go asking for help, it is important to understand your topic at least a little bit so searching it on Google, Bing, or any preferred online outlet. One great quote I used was, "People with Down syndrome show marked individual differences in cognitive abilities and skills." This helped me start my analysis with something that might have been difficult for me if I did not have this article. One benefit of this article is that it was made by 5 authors. Each with a different field. One a neurologist, one who is in medicine, and one was even a councilor for a school.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving. :)

(#5) Unit II

Hey guys. Sorry for the late post, I was in a middle of a trip where I woke up in Australia and had to travel to Syracuse in 5 days. Very painful, I will leave out all the grueling details.

So, in English class we are entering our final written project (just kidding) but alas a final nonetheless. So as you guys pointed I focused on the What Would You Do episode. I am very excited to see how this turns out. The original episode aired last year in June so I am excited that it is not to out of date. Furthermore, the whole social experiment was amazing! For those of you who have no clue what I am referring to click here for info https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=what+would+you+do+grocery&view=detail&mid=F3B5E45449B4B64F1FE2F3B5E45449B4B64F1FE2&FORM=VIRE

Down syndrome is (as taken from Mayo Clinic's website) "a genetic disorder caused when abnormal cell division results in an extra full or partial copy of chromosome 21."

My paper itself will be on how those with Down syndrome have a chance at becoming "normal" or in better words become independent. Something as such is very difficult, but with practice and a lot of love and care, it can come true.

This topic has become more and more important to me because I so happen know someone with Down syndrome who by the looks of it, you would never guess. They are very happy, they can speech moderately well, and to make things cooler she really enjoys watching cooking shows. Of course I would not expect every one with the same ailment to be acting the same but I do believe there is a chance that it can get better.

(#4) Thoughts of a Paper

So I am doing this 6 page paper for English and I am very indecisive as to what topic I am wishing to use. I know I want to write about how those who have mental issues can contribute to society but I am having a conundrum as to which sources I should use. Please comment down below to help!!!

  1. There is a T.V. show called "What Would You Do" where I plan on using the video as a 'survey' so to speak because it gave many examples as to how people treat those with a mental issue Down Syndrome to be precise.
  2. When I was in 5th grade my teacher told everyone in my class that I had dyslexia which actually haunted me so badly, I ended up reading more than anyone just to be on the same level. Seeing this my teacher feeling sorry created this see through bookmark where she highlighted a bold black line on it so I could read along it. While, looking at this I realized I started growing in this field because I was putting more work in compared to the other kids. Going forward I read this series called "Percy Jackson" by Rick Riordan which the main characters also had dyslexia but the reason they couldn't read English was because they were 'hardwired' for Greek. Which gives me the idea that many people with mental issues can excess in other fields. (i.e. Mr. Grefer had a student who was on a second grade reading level. He went to OCC for half a year then quit and now he is the owner of three houses which he rents out an he works in a cabinet factory line.)
  3. Lastly, (the one I am least excited for is to create a survey.) My teacher said this would be a good idea with those that apply things hard to observe elsewise. Personally, I took a student biased test so I know how to create one I just wouldn't want to look over every students answer, believing they are taking it seriously, and lastly making it my primary source just disturbs me because since this is such a soft issue I would rather it not be taken lightly.

Hopefully I didn't persuade your opinion. Help me out and thank you very much for your time. T.t.t.t.tThat's all Folks (Porky the Pig)
